Clay tiles offer the most authentic Mediterranean look with natural coloring that is baked into the material during firing. This means the color holds up for decades without fading. Clay absorbs very little water, which makes it highly resistant to moisture damage and ideal for coastal areas dealing with fog and salt air. The longevity is impressive, often lasting over a century when properly maintained. The tradeoff is the initial investment, and clay tiles are slightly more fragile under impact.
Concrete tiles provide similar protection and aesthetics at a more accessible commitment level. Modern concrete tiles can replicate the look of clay, wood shake, or slate. They are extremely durable and handle high winds well, with proper installation supporting incredible wind resistance. The main considerations are weight—concrete tiles can be significantly heavier than clay—and higher water absorption, which means they may require more maintenance in humid microclimates to prevent mildew or staining.
